Sedation & Nervous Patients

We understand and will do everything we can to put you at your ease

About Nervous Patients

Some people feel a deep-seated anxiety about their dental care. We understand. At Bite Dentistry in Edinburgh we want you to feel relaxed at the dentist, which is why we offer a wide range of relaxation and sedation techniques to help soothe even the most nervous patients. Please speak to us about your dental fears and we will do everything we can to help.

Our team is approachable, warm and friendly and really cares about your wellbeing. We find that for many nervous patients what they really need is to feel listened to. We have every sympathy for anyone who is anxious about their dental visits. We will work at a speed you are comfortable with and will take all the time you need to feel calm and reassured.

Eimear and her team build excellent, long-term relationships with patients and as well as a sympathetic ear and calming chairside manner, offer hypnosis, anxiety management and three types of sedation; intravenous, gas and air, and oral sedatives.

Intravenous (IV) sedation is a Valium-based drug injected into the back of the hand. It is sometimes called conscious sedation because you are not 'put to sleep' but are in a very relaxed state. Most patients prefer this type of sedation because there is often no memory of the procedure afterwards therefore making this the most effective way of calming people who are extremely nervous.

RA sedation (relative analgesia) or gas and air can be used for children and adults who are really nervous of the dentist and it is especially useful for people with needle phobias.

Oral sedation is a Valium-based tablet that can be prescribed to take the evening before dental treatment and in the morning to help ease anxiety. This is also a good method for patients who are afraid of needles.

“An implant really was the only option for me because this would mean I had complete confidence in my teeth afterwards.”

Eleanor Harrison

Eleanor said the idea of having dental implant treatment was far worse than the reality and that she didn’t experience any problems whatsoever.
