Mouth Cancer Action Month

posted October 9th, 2021

Regular oral check-ups are important for maintaining your oral hygiene but when it comes to mouth cancer these initial check-ups are vital. The cases of mouth cancer within the UK have risen by 49% in the past 10 years, so it’s now more important than ever to get your teeth checked at Bite Dentistry.

Mouth Cancer Action Month is a charity campaign organised by the Oral Health Foundation, taking place throughout November. The campaign sets out to raise awareness and share the importance of mouth care and proper dental hygiene.

Mouth cancer can be identified in its early stages within your routine dentist appointment, so it is important to be seen regularly by your dentist. Helping spot the symptoms early on, and giving patients peace of mind from a professional dental treatment.

How to spot Mouth Cancer at home

Keeping on top of your oral hygiene is important and understanding what’s happening inside your month can help identify any issues and spot mouth cancer in its initial stages. By spotting mouth cancer early, you have a much better chance of beating it. Whilst the issue can be identified at your routine check-up, being aware of the symptoms whilst at home can give you a better understanding of your health.

Key symptoms to look out for:

  • The feeling that something is caught in your throat
  • Numbness of the tongue or other areas of the mouth
  • Chronic sore throat that persists more than six weeks
  • A lump or swelling anywhere in the mouth for longer than 3 weeks
  • Difficulty swallowing, chewing or moving the jaw or tongue

If you have any of these symptoms or are worried about your oral health, then why not book an oral examination to put your mind at ease.

The common causes of Mouth Cancer

Whilst we don’t know what causes most mouth cancers, however, there are several factors that are likely to increase your risk of developing Mouth Cancer. Up to 90% of all mouth cancers are linked to lifestyle factors.

This means that with a few small changes to your lifestyle the risk of developing Mouth Cancer becomes much lower.

There are several factors that can increase your chances of developing Mouth Cancer such as:

  • Smoking Tobacco
  • Drinking excessive amounts of alcohol
  • Unhealthy diets mainly those with a lack of vitamins and minerals
