There are a few simple tricks and tips that you can do to keep your oral hygiene in good condition and still enjoy all of the delightful Christmas treats.

The festive season is full of delicious and indulgent foods and drinks. This increased intake of sugar, whether it be from sweet foods, alcohol or sugary drinks means it's important to take care of our mouths and overall oral hygiene. There are a few simple tricks and tips that you can do to keep your oral hygiene in good condition and still enjoy all of the delightful Christmas treats.

Limit the Frequency of Sugar

It’s not so much the quantity of sugar consumed, although this does have an impact, it’s more the amount of time sugar stays in your mouth. With higher than usual levels of sugar ingested around Christmas, taking the appropriate steps to minimise how long it stays in the mouth can be beneficial. Try limiting the volume of sugary snacks in between meals to help teeth to recuperate before the next hit of sweet treats.

Stick to Your Tooth Brushing Routine

Christmas causes our daily norms to change somewhat. As well as a difference in diet, there are also shifts in sleeping patterns, later nights and trips away to stay with friends and family. It’s vital to not let these differences alter our oral hygiene routines and brushing at least twice a day is more important than ever - brush teeth three times a day where possible, include flossing, use mouthwash and most importantly, stick to it.

Drink Plenty of Water for Good Oral Hygiene

Regularly drinking water is a great way to promote positive oral hygiene. Sipping water will refresh the mouth and remove some of the sugar that remains. In addition to this, Christmas is a time where alcoholic and sweet soft drinks are consumed more often than usual which will only add to the amount of sugar in the mouth. Water will effectively wash away some of this sugar and help to protect teeth.

Give the Gift of a New Toothbrush

Toothbrushes should be replaced every three to four months and Christmas can be the perfect time to treat family or friends with a shiny new one. Electric toothbrushes can make a great gift and are a present the person will be able to use for many years to come. One of the benefits of an electric toothbrush is the ability to change the brush head once the bristles become worn or when it's time for a new one. Give the gift of good oral health this year.
