In this crucial time, the individual effort of each and every person has a direct impact on the effectiveness of reducing the spread of the virus. Positively studies now indicate that the use of mouthwash can help to prevent the Covid spread.
Positively, within the UK there are now two coronavirus (or Covid-19) vaccines available that are being administered to a portion of the population. Despite this, the virus continues to be having detrimental effects and heightened preventative measures are in place to help limit the spread. In this crucial time, the individual effort of each and every person has a direct impact on the effectiveness of reducing the spread of the virus. Personal protective measures include the covering of the mouth with face masks, maintaining a distance of two metres, washing hands regularly and studies now show that the use of mouthwash can help to prevent the Covid spread.
In a recent study conducted by Microbac Laboratories on behalf of Unilever, it was found that a mouthwash containing CPC Technology is effective in reducing the virus by 99.9% after 30 seconds of rinsing. In addition to this, a further study carried out by scientists at Cardiff University also reported preliminary results that mouthwash including cetylpyridinium chloride (CPC) has promising signs of minimising the spread of coronavirus.
Cetylpyridinium Chloride or CPC is currently regularly used within the dental industry. CPC has the ability to prevent issues with oral health and oral diseases with its antibacterial and antiviral properties. These antivirus advantages have now been found to have a positive part to play in minimising transmission of Covid-19.
In the study by scientists at Cardiff University, it was outlined that Dentyl was the only UK mouthwash brand to have participated in the study. CPC is not present in all mouthwash products, although it’s clearly outlined on the packaging of those that do contain CPC. If you are unsure, check the ingredients on the mouthwash bottle you are purchasing for any mention of CPC.
The use of mouthwash is thought to be an additional measure that can be taken in minimising the transmission of the virus; along with the other protective actions of washing hands, wearing face coverings and keeping a distance of two meters. Similarly to the existing guidelines, continuing to use mouthwash or starting to include it in our daily oral health regimes is a simple and beneficial step we can all take.
