  • 5 Reasons to Visit Your Oral Hygienist This Month

Regular oral hygiene check-ups are the key to maintaining a healthy and happy smile. Of course, for many of us, we’ve been unable to keep up our routine appointments over the last year due to COVID restrictions in the UK.

Thankfully, we’re finally starting to emerge from strict social distancing measures here in Scotland, meaning we can once again tick off that all-important trip to the oral hygienist. Here are 5 reasons to get your general oral hygiene checked this month.

1. Social distancing restrictions are relaxing

As the country moves to level 0 restrictions, dental practices can finally relax a little bit and help make your general dentistry visit a little more personal. The last year and a bit has been a trying time for all of us, so what a pleasure to begin the process of returning to a natural way of doing things!

That being said, your safety remains our top priority. If you are feeling apprehensive about your visit, contact us before your appointment and we’ll do our best to accommodate you in a fashion that meets your needs and helps you to feel safe. We’re still abiding by the government’s guidelines and will continue to do so until further notice.

2. Remove tough stains built up over the months

Our teeth naturally build up plaque over time, so it’s recommended we have a general oral hygiene appointment every 6 months. For many of us, it’s been a lot longer than that without a routine polish, so getting a professional deep clean is long overdue! A deep clean will enhance your dental hygiene by removing surface stains and making your teeth feel fresh and reinvigorated. It will also prevent future issues with your teeth and contribute to long-term oral health.

3. Ensure there are no new issues with your oral health

It’s likewise been a while since our teeth and gums have had normal access to a professional inspection. Having an assessment from a dentist or hygienist contributes to the longevity of our smiles, so a periodic check-up is vital – and now is the perfect time to get one.

You’ll generally be able to have a routine check-up and polish in a single visit, making it easier than ever to ensure a healthy smile. There’s a strong link between oral health and overall health, which is why making sure our mouths are well-looked after is so important.

4. Get at-home cleaning advice from a professional

As you know, your at-home cleaning routine makes up the bulk of your general oral hygiene. As such, our cleaning rituals must be effective. A visit to your hygienist will ultimately complement your home cleaning routine in two ways:

  • A polish will clean the hard-to-reach areas of your mouth that are easy to miss at home
  • Most importantly, your hygienist will give you expert advice on how to continue excellent oral hygiene at home

5. It’s the perfect time for your child’s check-up before schools reopen

We know how stressful it can be to get your kids seen by a hygienist during the school year. That’s why the summer holidays are the perfect opportunity to breeze through that to-do list of theirs while they have the time, ensuring their young smiles are developing properly.
